Paint Calculator for NZ Painters & Homeowners
Calculate how many litres of paint you need for any room, ceiling, or exterior. Coverage rates vary by product — always check the tin, but 10 m²/L is a safe average for interior walls and 8 m²/L for exteriors.
Coverage Guide by Paint Type
| Paint Type | Typical Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Interior walls (water-based) | 10–14 m²/L | Per coat |
| Interior ceiling | 11–15 m²/L | Flat white, per coat |
| Exterior (texture) | 4–8 m²/L | Rough surfaces use more |
| Exterior (smooth) | 8–12 m²/L | Weatherboard, per coat |
| Primer/undercoat | 8–10 m²/L | Always prime bare timber |

- New surfaces: 1 coat primer + 2 coats topcoat minimum
- Repaints (same colour): 2 coats
- Colour change (dark to light): 3 coats often needed
