How does this checker work?
We compare your quote against the typical price range for that job type and city, based on NZ job cost research across 29 common trade jobs and 20 cities.
Every city has a regional multiplier β Auckland is around 15% above the NZ average, Queenstown 20% above, while Invercargill, Gisborne and Whanganui are typically 9β10% below. Your quote is compared against the adjusted range for your specific city.
What counts as a "fair" quote?
Within the typical range is our baseline. But fair also depends on:
- What's included β a low quote that excludes materials or building consent isn't cheaper overall
- Materials spec β budget vs. premium fixtures, timber, or paint significantly affect price
- Timing and availability β busy tradies or urgent jobs often cost more
- Tradie experience and licensing β a master electrician with 20 years experience may charge more than someone newly licensed
When to get more quotes
Always get at least 3 quotes for jobs over $10,000. For jobs above $30,000, get 3 detailed written quotes with line-item breakdowns so you can compare apples with apples.
The quote is very low β should I be worried?
A quote significantly below the typical range (more than 20β25% below the low end) can indicate:
- Scope exclusions β materials, consents, or compliance items missing
- Lower-quality materials being substituted
- Operator without full licensing or insurance
- Introductory pricing from a newer operator (can be fine, but verify their track record)
Ask for a detailed written quote with line items. A reputable tradie will be happy to explain their pricing.
